Mentoring - pros and cons
By Margot-helena Kasari
Being part of a lot of mailing lists and owning a lot of information products, I quite often get offers to participate in a mentoring programme of an "Internet guru". Or something similar - getting a half-personalised education, approach and support. For a far-from-half price, of course. It seems a kind of a dead circle. In order to succeed you need the knowledge. You could learn by trial and error, waste a lot of money and time and still end up nowhere. You could consider a short-cut, which I think these mentoring programmes basically are. Someone, who has been there and done that, will take you from the bottom up, so that you will save the trial and error. On the other hand, the mentoring programme usually costs more than an average person can afford to pay upfront. So basically you're stuck - you need to spend money to make money. But to be able to spend the money, you would first need to have made some money - unless you're rich by heritage, in which case you wouldn't have to bother making money anyway. I would be interested to hear the opinions of those, who have participated in a mentoring programme or similar. Did it help? Was it what you expected? I would also like to hear from those, who have considered it, but not participated - why not? So feel free to take maximum advantage of the commenting option :) |
