Success stories - where do they come from?

Where do success stories come from?
On every sales page there are screen-shots, testimonials, audio and video messages. Often the pages are different, promoting different products, yet the names and faces are the same.
So I always wonder, who are these persons behind the pictures. Is there a service that you can sell your photo and name and allow it to be used for promotional purposes? I know you can get a ready-made website from My product centre, for example. Choose a topic, enter your payment details and voila - you've got yourself one of those shiny websites with nice pictures and incredible testimonials.
And yet - you don't know any of these people, you don't know the author of the eBook, you may not even know anything about the product.
Is this legal, I wonder? But it wasn't the legitimacy I wanted to question. I'm genuinely interested to find out, where the success stories come from.
